Costume Modesty: Is Halloween an Excuse to be Loose?

Many of us, of Christian faith or otherwise, do not celebrate Halloween. However, this post is not about trying to convince you of the reasons Halloween is evil. It is simply a reminder, if you are dressing up in costumes for Halloween or any other event, for you and your children to be ever ready to dress modestly! And what better time to write about costume modesty than in October?

It is rather disappointing to see that some women (and men) who on regular days are modest and conservative (probably because of their being shy and comfortable in baggy clothing and not because of convictions) will go almost naked when wearing (or not wearing) costumes on Halloween.

Halloween is the “perfect” excuse to be slutty, so it seems. Hardly anyone judges you for wearing hooker heels and low V-neck tops, because that is what’s being sold everywhere in costume stores. You know where else you can find these costumes? Porno shops, all year round. October is the month when you can find a little piece of your friendly Adult store in the aisles of almost every retail store.

Perhaps if it isn’t the pagan or Satanic influence that prompts you to not celebrate Halloween, it should be the blatant sexual display of the body, including that of children’s. It is the one night where our children are openly invited and allowed to accept processed candies and treats from total strangers, some of whom may be pedophiles.

I personally do not have anything against just costume wearing or pretend play. We should enjoy creativity, because our God is creative! Through clothing, we can tell stories that inspire and invoke childlike wonder. Jesus told parables to reveal truth, and so fiction and storytelling through our clothing may not be bad in and of itself.

MODEST COSTUME ALTERNATIVES

Speaking of which, here are some cute and modest costumes for men, women, and children alike. These can even be worn for parties and events besides Halloween.

Let me start with modest couple costumes from Disney back when they were somewhat wholesome and family-friendly!

For girls, boys, and even the whole family, dressing up as Bible characters is a lot of fun for educational purposes!

  1. These modest costumes are adorable especially the Disney couple one….you and your hubby look so lovely…and so does that couple dressed as Ariel and the prince.

I don’t celebrate Halloween but I do love to see the costumes of those that celebrate it…Some people really enjoy this holiday and I don’t see anything wrong with that. However, some take it a bit too far…there is no need to go all crazy because it is a holiday. If one going to be in a public place, where children and other people can see you, one should really try to keep some parts of the body private….with that I do agree…. some people should reconsider their ‘going out of the house’ costume options and keep the other stuff for private parties.
