Introduce yourself and your blog!
I’m Melanie, married to my best friend, and mom to two precious girls. I blog at Wind in a Letterbox: http://melanieblignaut.wordpress.com
I write about my faith in Jesus and how that plays out in my marriage, my parenting, and our homeschooling journey. I see my blog as a ministry to other moms (and dads too) who are at a similar stage of life, and I hope that my writing encourages and inspires.
How do you define modesty?
I see modesty not as something restrictive, but more as a way that I can honour God and my husband. I think it’s possible to look and feel beautiful without wearing next-to-nothing.
I wrote a post here on how having daughters has also influenced how I dress.
How did you come to modesty? Why do you dress the way you do?
I think it’s partly becoming more secure in my own identity and not needing to rely on my appearance for validation. I want to look good for my husband, of course, but only for him.
I want to model modesty for my daughters, and to raise them to be secure in who they are, so that they can dress to their taste without wearing revealing clothes.
Care to share your faith denomination? Does your church or community believe, see, or practice modesty as you do?
I belong to a Baptist church. I think there are only dress code requirements for those in a visible ministry, such as worship team members who are on stage not to perform but to lead worship.
Who is your modesty or modest fashion role model? Why?
I don’t know. I’ve never really thought of having a modest fashion role model.
What do you do outside of your blog? Do you have a store/are you a student/married/a professional, etc.? How do you balance your offline life with your online presence?
I homeschool our daughters, and also tutor and teach preschool drama part-time. I’m not sure I have the right online/offline balance right yet, but I try not to let my blogging distract from being present with my family.
What are your other interests besides modesty? Yes, it can be “secular!” 😉 Anything you want to share that’s extra interesting about you that people might not know?
I’m a bookworm, I like to knit and craft, and I’ve recently gotten into those adult colouring pages.
What is your favorite practical fashion modesty tip? Please explain in detail for our audience!
I ask myself if I would want my daughters to wear that particular item, and if the answer is no then I won’t wear it out. I’ve had to carefully re-look at my wardrobe!
If cleavage is showing, wear something underneath or change.
Leave us with words of wisdom from yourself or a quote from someone else!
“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:30
